Blendr’s all about taking online dating for a quick spin, and that’s most evident in its Encounters feature. Through Encounters, Blendr sends you a list of users who share your interests. You’ll view their profile photos, and a quick flick to the right or left will indicate whether or not you want to meet them. It’s a much faster process than you’d normally get from an online dating site, and good for you, too: considering Blendr’s count of over 340 million users on their system, you’ll have quite a pool to sort through.
Creating your own profile is equally fast, since Blendr eschews the lengthy personality assessments that many of its competitors often include as part of the registration process. Instead, you’ll simply fill out the information you’d like others to know about you, and your indicated interests serve as the main means for Blendr to pluck matches for you from its user base.
The obvious trade-off there, of course, is that this likely makes for shallower matches overall. You can, of course, hash out the finer details of your compatibility with another user over some good, old-fashioned conversation, but you’ll have relatively little idea of how things might stand going in.
Communication Options
Speaking of conversation, Blendr has a simple messaging system. Unlike many of its competitors, Blendr doesn’t give you a variety of communication options — no guided messages or minigames to help break the ice, for example. This might pose a challenge if you find initiating conversation to be a bit awkward.
A slightly bigger drawback is how the messaging function is tied directly to matches. You can only send someone messages if you’ve Liked each other on the Encounters feature. If you delete your message thread with a match, that will delete the match itself, too — you won’t be able to send that user a message unless they send you one from their (hopefully undeleted) side of the chat first.
The “Request a Selfie” feature is a relatively unique part of Blendr’s messaging system, and it’s there to help women feel more comfortable about their communications on the site. Sending a request will make a camera prompt pop-up on your chatmate’s screen, and they’ll be directed to take a selfie that will immediately be sent to you. That way, you can be sure you know who you’re really talking to.
Search Options
Unfortunately, Blendr doesn’t quite compare with many of its competitors when it comes to manual searches. You can search based on interests and location, as well as by username if you’re looking for a specific person. However, there’s not much beyond that. You won’t find the extensive selection of filters that you might on other online dating sites.
