Like many competitors, Matchmaker lets you create a free account to get a feel for the website and its many features. On a free plan, you can browse profiles, check out other users’ photos, and even use the “Show Interest” feature to send a generic alert informing another member of your interest in them. However, if you want to start using Matchmaker in earnest, you’ll have to sign up for a paid subscription plan, which Matchmaker calls “Gold Membership.”
Gold Membership will give you access to vital tools, the most important of which are Matchmaker’s communication features (email, instant messaging, chat, etc.). If you’re really looking to meet people, Gold Membership is the only way to go.
Matchmaker offers a number of subscription lengths for you to choose from, and their corresponding fees are:
- $34.95 for one month
- $23.32 per month for 3 months
- $16.66 per month for 6 months
- $11.66 per month for 12 months
While the cost does go down for longer subscriptions, bear in mind that you’ll have to pay the cost of the whole subscription length upfront. You might be able to save more money per month on a 12-month subscription, for example, but that will require a payment of $139.92 in one go.

Ease of Use
One of Matchmaker’s best points is its straightforward account creation process. All you need to do is enter basic personal information (e.g., name, location, birthdate), upload a photo, and provide a few quick details about your appearance, lifestyle, and hobbies. These include points like religion and frequency of drinking and smoking sessions, as well as interests and hobbies that you can simply select from a short, pre-determined list. Finally, you can also give Matchmaker details about your ideal date, including your preferred physical attributes and personality traits. This helps alert not just the system itself, but other users as well, as to what you’re looking for in your matches.
Matchmaker has an impressive, easy-to-use menu bar to help you get around. Clicking on the menu button brings a drop down window that runs down links to 3 major categories: Navigation, which lists down matchmaking-related pages like home, search and messages; Activity, which has quick links to your views, likes and active members (very helpful for a quick online chat); and Manage, where you can find links to the settings, their contact page, to option to upgrade and log-out.
Finding and Connecting with Matches
Matchmaker offers Mingle, a quick matchmaking system that shows you profiles one by one with a brief summary of each user’s personal details. The feature asks you to check “Yes” or “No” on these profiles. A “No” sends you to the next profile on the list, while a “Yes” redirects you to that user’s full profile page. From there, you can view more of their photos and read more of their personal details to get a better idea of their looks and personality.
If you’re familiar with Facebook’s Newsfeed system, then you already know how Matchmaker’s Activity Feed works. This section keeps you updated on other users’ profile and activity changes. As a bonus, it encourages members to keep their profiles fresh in order to gain more exposure.
Matchmaker also has a daily question feature, where you can respond to simple questions posted at your homepage. Answering these questions will give other users a clearer idea of your personality and preferences, and browsing others’ answers will give you a good start when it comes to weeding out particular personality types or profiles that lie outside your interests.
Aside from these, Matchmaker delivers pretty standard online dating fare. Matches are made based on your profile information and indicated preferences, though Matchmaker’s compatibility assessment system seems to be less accurate and a bit more superficial than the systems used by many of its competitors.
When it comes to communication, you’ll have the standard arsenal of email, instant messaging, and chat. However, as with most other online dating sites, you’ll need a paid subscription to make use of any of these.

Matchmaker doesn’t stray from the usual template of an online dating site: You’ll get the usual personal profiles, communication tools, and match-search features. The site’s simple registration process and organized layout are points in its favor, but those are easily outweighed by Matchmaker’s smaller user base (which makes for limited matches) and limited mobile options. If you’re looking for a supplementary dating service to give you another avenue for seeking out dates, then this site does perfectly well. But if you’re looking for an online dating service that can serve as your main way to meet new people, Matchmaker might not be up to scratch.
