Perks and Features
While it’s been mentioned above, it cannot be stressed enough: Sports Crate is run by Loot Crate. Why is this important? For one thing, Loot Crate’s thriving business model is clearly working; the company is growing fast, and it’s one of the most popular brands in its industry. Loot Crate knows how to service fans. Yes, the bulk of the company’s experience so far has been with gaming and geek fans; but the fact of the matter is that they have a natural understanding of how to deal with rabid, passionate fanatics that like to celebrate what they love.
Plus, there’s the practical side of it all. Sports may be a new frontier for Loot Crate, but offering a subscription box service certainly isn’t. The scope and range of Sports Crate in terms of its offerings may take some time to widen; but the excellence, accountability and professionalism expected of it are already ingrained and typical of the company’s workflow.
Sports Crate Golden Ticket Sweepstakes
One of the most exciting things about Sports Crate is its Golden Ticket sweepstakes, which subscribers are automatically part of–Season Pass plan subscribers even get two entries that carry over to the succeeding months if not drawn as a winner, effectively doubling their chances of winning. Monthly draws treat fans to special VIP experiences that vary based on the winner’s team of choice; as a subscriber, you find out if you’ve won upon receiving your monthly crate.
Is there a Golden Ticket inside your crate? If so, you may win: the chance to attend batting practice, autographed memorabilia, game tickets to a stadium suite, a ride on the bus with your favorite team, a chance to throw out the first pitch, and more.
Team and Theme
When you subscribe to Sports Crate, the first thing you will have to do is pick the team you are rooting for; after that, you choose between a Recurring Monthly plan or a Season Pass plan. You’ll also have to fill out your shirt and waist size, as a crate will typically include at least one wearable item. Everything sent to you will be connected to the team you pick.
However, that’s not all. You pick the team; Sports Crate picks the theme. Each crate has a specific unifying element; for example, Sports Crate’s July 2017 theme is Round Tripper, which celebrates the fan experience from behind the wheel by sending you road warrior essentials.
What You Get in Each Crate
Currently Sports Crate offers subscriptions to fans of the following Major League Baseball teams: the Boston Red Sox, the Chicago Cubs, the Detroit Tigers, the Kansas City Royals, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the New York Mets, the New York Yankees, the San Francisco Giants, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Texas Rangers.
Now that we know how the crates are being curated–for fans, by fans; emphasizing both team and theme–it’s time to dive into the nitty-gritty of it all: What do you get in each crate, really? Let’s look at the two plans available: the Recurring Monthly and the Season Pass.
Both the Recurring Monthly and the Season Pass crates contain five to seven items–all authentic, officially licensed and exclusive Major League Baseball apparel, collectibles and team gear. Apparel can be anything from socks or hats, to shirts or boxers. Often, you will get exclusive Baller action figures; other collectibles may come in the form of baseball cards or other usable accessories. Crates also come with intangibles, like the automatic Golden Ticket entries. Each monthly crate will vary slightly, and may include other freebies. For example, the July 2017 Sports Crate includes a one month free trial of MLB.tv and a 2017 All Star Pack for the mobile game Home Run Derby.
In addition to the extra sweepstakes entry and the 10% crate price discount per month, Season Pass plan subscribers also get an extra action figure. An extra fact about these action figures: No, they are not the usual bobblehead toy with a static body and moving head; rather, they are smaller but easier to pose, with over 20 points of articulation.
As Sports Crate services–as of this writing–only Major League Baseball fans, the monthly crates only get shipped out during months that the sport is in season: May to September. Two plans and shipping included in the cost of either means that there are easy to remember price points for both: Recurring Monthly at $39.99 and Season Pass for $179.99.
Recurring Monthly has you pay per individual crate; the subscription automatically renews each month, although you can contact Sports Crate and cancel anytime. Season Pass is inclusive of all five crates from May to September, and the 10% discount on each crate amounts to almost $20 in savings–if you were to compare it to being on the Recurring Monthly plan for five months.
It’s been mentioned above, but it bears repeating: customer support needs improvement. Not only does Sports Crate share with Loot Crate a curious lack of ways to directly contact the company–your only option is to submit a ticket; no hotline, no email, no live chat–but its FAQ and Help Center is raw and underdeveloped. Because it’s a relatively new brand, even checking social media rarely helps; even though they are starting to build a respectable Facebook, Twitter and Instagram presence.
What's the Verdict on Sports Crate?
Sports Crate Review 2017 – Conclusion
With Sports Crate, many of the complaints are due to shortcomings that will no doubt be addressed as the demand for the service grows; so it’s difficult to come to a final conclusion. For example: As of this writing, there are hints on Sports Crate’s official website and social media channels of more Major League Baseball teams being added soon, and down the line, maybe even more major league sports teams–like those from the NBA or NFL. The FAQ and Help Center is also easy to update; in fact, it may be bare right now because there are not many queries and tickets coming in needing clarification. Because it’s affiliated with Loot Crate, good service is to be expected; all you need to figure out is if the $39.99 price tag for one crate is worth it for you–assuming you’re a fan of one of the 10 baseball teams Sports Crate works with, of course. If it is, take the plunge, and who knows? You might even get a Golden Ticket.
