Also, here are some important things we looked at for our rankings.

Operating System

Most dedicated server hosting providers give you two options for your operating system: Linux, which tends to be highly technical but is full of customizations and updates due to the system being open-sourced; and Windows, which is the usual Microsoft-enabled server. Linux servers usually provide support for MySQL, PHP, Python, Perl, and other coding languages. Windows, on the other hand, is needed if you have applications running on ASP Classic, ASP.NET, MSSQL, MS Access, Visual Basic, and C#, among others.

Package Features

Aside from the server specifications, it would be wise to check the other features that a dedicated server hosting provider includes in the package. This usually consists of multi- language coding support, uptime guarantees, DDoS protection, and many, many more varieties which can help your website's overall performance and maintenance. It is advisable to compare these inclusions together with the prices because you may get more value out of your money if you add a little extra to enjoy useful features instead of going with a vanilla service.

Freebies

Given the more expensive nature of dedicated servers, most hosting providers throw in a freebie or two to justify the expense aside from their server package. While the usual added service that you can enjoy is a website builder with lots of templates, there are others that go beyond the norm by offering free domain transfers and reseller accounts, among other things. Wouldn't you be maximizing your money's value by getting the most out of a service?

Price and Flexibility

Of course, one thing to always check and compare when looking for any kind of service is the price tag. Since you will be using a whole server instead of sharing it with other customers, rates are understandably higher when compared to shared hosting services. Some providers allow a degree of customization where you can choose the RAM capacity, number of cores, and even the kind of drive the server has (hard drive or solid state drive). Usually every upgrade equals an additional amount in your bill. If your website has unique requirements, then you'll benefit more from a custom configuration and gain more from your expenses, as compared to a one-size fits all package.

Support

Last but not the least, a company's customer support is more often than not a big determinant of the quality of their service. A provider with less than pleasant customer service can easily translate to unresolved performance issues, ultimately resulting to opportunity loss on your part. On the other hand, a support team that is not only always present, but also active in responding to messages can fix an issue in a matter of minutes, or at least give information on the actions done to remedy the outage. Most hosting providers open their lines 24/7 for clients to contact the support team, although the quality of customer service still varies widely.
